Under an hour's drive from Adelaide, along the spectacular coast of Fleurieu Peninsula is one of Australia's oldest wine regions. McLaren Vale wineries are located snugly between the Mt Lofty mountain ranges and the sea. A low lying vista of vineyards surrounds the pretty central township of McLaren Vale, while the outer region includes Clarendon and Reynella to the north, Sellicks Hill to the south, east to Kangarilla and Aldinga Bay wines is situated west along the coast.
Wines of South Australia are renowned as the best in the country. Most notable wine of the region is Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot among many other varieties. Wine tours are a great way to taste the produce from the area. Events and festivals are held regularly to celebrate the local wines and gourmet food, including Sea and The Vines Festival in June and Wine Bushing Festival later in the year.
Some wineries are over 100 years old, and still produce grapes from original vines. Rosemount Estate, Tyrrells Vineyards and Chapel Hill are some to choose from, many offer restaurants and B&B's for a romantic weekend away amidst stunning scenery.
A short trip away is Victor Harbour and other stunning beaches of Fleurieu Peninsula. Kangaroo Island is close by, accessible from Cape Jervis.
Other activities include bushwalking in national parks with superb walking trails or a stunning coastal bike track at Encounter Bay. In addition to the delicious food and wine trails on the McLaren Vale map, Fleurieu Art Trail offers 19 studios and galleries to appreciate along the peninsula.
